The Internet has not been kind to the band Disturbed. Reviews are split between fan boys and metal purists. Some claim Disturbed is not metal at all and is too mainstream. While the fans drool over the “guitar solos” and the driving “beat”.
First off Disturbed is impossible to classify for many reasons. They aren’t hard enough to be metal that’s for sure. They sound heavy but they don’t personify it like other metal bands. 3 Inches of Blood is a great example. They are absolutely insane about what they do and are almost one dimensional in their view on metal (in a good way). They eat, sleep, breath, and worship metal. Disturbed is just kind of between the lines of all classification. They are part hard rock, part metal (slightly), part pop, and slightly overproduced. In fact a little too produced.
10,000 Fists was a great example of Disturbed. They fused all of their influences to the best of their abilities and really produced a solid album. What was really bothersome about the album was its pop aspect. The ear friendly riffs and lack luster guitar solos presented gave mixed signals. They present it as this metal icon and it delivers a rather weak sound. Strip away the guitar tone and they sound like Foreigner! This album was a step down and regretfully Indestructible is yet another step downward. A very large, expensive step ($15.99)
Indestructible shows how ineffective and bland disturbed can be. Every track sounds the same and nothing sticks out as a real keeper. The lyrics, musicianship, and vocals all sound atrocious. Singer David Draiman can’t make up his mind weather to sing his heart out or growl the lyrics. This album shows his attempts at vocal growth (futile as they may be).
The lyrics are a whole different story.
“Devon No longer living Who had been rendered unwhole. As a little child, she was taken and then forsaken you will remember it all Let it blow your mind again”
…exactly. Only Disturbed could rhyme “F***ing up my life” with “Sucking up my life”. There is no saving this album.
The only thing left to point out is the obvious lack of talent from guitarist Dan Donegan. These bizarre guitar “solos” are just laughable. I won’t waste my time naming the better musicians.
All in all I think they need to make drastic changes to save their careers, because if another album this bad comes out their image will be significantly unsalvageable. (Unless of course they go more mainstream, where people don’ t know the difference between Pink Floyd and Green Day)
